Everybody wants to obtain life and health; we can feel disheartened when we’re not experiencing it. Life and health look quite different for all of us. You may desire your body to be physically stronger or for sicknesses, pains and negative diagnoses to leave. You may desire to be walking in your purpose but at the moment it feels like you’re just working to pay the bills and stay afloat. Maybe you desire healing in your heart from painful situations. Whatever life and health look like for you, missing out on it can leave you disheartened and feeling as though you’re not good enough. The result of this is usually that you end up looking for what you need in different places. I want you to know that Jesus has made you good enough and He wants you to obtain life and health the best way!
The woman who was diseased with an issue of blood for twelve years was no stranger to searching for life and health from many sources, yet none of those sources benefitted her. In fact, it left her in a worse state and to add insult to injury, it left her broke. However, just like this woman who obtained life and health through hearing of Jesus and acting in faith, we also can choose to stop searching for our own quick fixes, and instead obtain life and health in God’s way.
So, you desire to walk in this abundant life, but so far everything else you’ve tried just doesn’t seem to fulfil you. Nothing else is working. Let’s get into the meat of it and find out how we can obtain this better life.
Key scripture on life and health
My son, attend to my words; Incline thine ear unto my sayings. Let them not depart from thine eyes; Keep them in the midst of thine heart. For they are life unto those that find them, And health to all their flesh.
Proverbs 4:20-22 KJV
Just like me, maybe you have come across this passage of scripture many times. Every time I read those verses, my focus had been on the words ‘attend’ and ‘incline’. Likely because those are the verbs that inform me I need to take action. However, when I recently read this scripture, I was blessed as the emphasis of the verses changed. Just for a moment, let’s focus on the word ‘my’, it will give new meaning to the verse.
The number one way is through God’s Word
Here’s verse 20 again:
My son, attend to my words; Incline thine ear unto my sayings.
Provers 4:20 KJV
‘My’ is spoken by our Lord God referring to Himself. As we read the scripture with that in mind, it tells us that there is opportunity or temptation to attend unto others’ words or incline our ear to others’ sayings.
This could be the words and sayings of the news, the generational illnesses that seem to be in the family, the bad diagnosis from the doctor, or the television adverts telling you that you’re getting old and need to slow down. In this age of technology, there are many voices to listen to, but the majority of them are not in line with God’s word.
Life and health come from God’s word and sayings, it cannot come from the words and sayings of things that are other than God. In fact, I’d be bold enough to say that death and destruction will be ushered in when we are listening to words that aren’t in line with God’s sayings. Constantly tuning into the news (which is usually negative) is going to sow fear into our hearts. Researching every sickness on Dr Google is bound to give sickness authority in our bodies. As believers, this is not God’s desire for us.
Once again, the Lord says to attend unto HIS words and HIS sayings.
Elevate God’s Word greater than anyone or anything else
The Bible doesn’t inform us of the back story of the woman with the issue of blood, but I do wonder whether those doctors and physicians she had previously gone to could have been telling her all sorts of negative things. ‘You’ll never heal from this. You just have to learn to live with it. If this remedy doesn’t work there’s nothing else.’ Across those twelve years of suffering, she must have faced many negative reports. However, when she had heard of Jesus she knew that she would be made whole (Mark 5:27-28). At that moment, she chose to elevate the words of Jesus greater than the negative reports she had previously received from the doctors. Through her attending to Jesus’ words and inclining her ear to Jesus’ sayings, she was able to find life and health. You can too!
Just for a moment, think about the negative reports you have been giving your ear to. What have you been hearing about your physical body, about your financial state, about how far a person like you can go in this life? Maybe you’ve elevated a diagnosis over your mind or your child’s mind. It could even be words that were spoken to you many years ago; words that have formed a strong belief in your heart. Now is the time to elevate God’s truth over those negative reports.
The main lesson that will benefit you from this post is that the number one way to obtain life and health is through God’s Word. You may already be quite familiar with God’s promises for you and you can navigate away from this post knowing exactly what scripture the Lord wants you to meditate on.
